Dr. Julie Anderson-Suddarth has been on the Children’s Cancer Connection Board of Directors since 2019. She is currently the Board Secretary, a member of the Executive Committee and the Chair of the Governance Committee. Julie also previously served as Board President.
Julie is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine & Pediatric Sedation Physician at Blank Children’s Hospital. Her connection to the children CCC serves and a push from a friend led her to initially have interest in the Board of Directors.
“At work, I interact with many of the CCC families either sedating for procedures or in the Emergency Department when the kids are ill. I wanted an opportunity to get more involved, make a difference outside of the hospital and provide a medical perspective on the Board,” Julie said.
In addition to Board duties, Julie is a member of the CCC Medical Advisory Committee. She volunteers at Family Camp and Day Camp, the annual Holiday Drop-Off and third-party events such as Des Moines Concours d’Elegance. She also enjoys making fleece tie blankets with her two sons for campers.
“I love to be involved with the organization in all aspects,” Julie said. “Hearing about all the great programs, getting the opportunity to help grow the organization and reach more families/kids is amazing. I love the chance to see kids outside of the hospital setting, too.”
Looking toward the future of Children’s Cancer Connection, Julie said she would love to see the organization continue to grow and be able to provide some regional programs. She is also excited for the new inclusive playground to be built and for the remodel of the Jeff and Deb Hanson Home for Hope to be completed. Overall, she really wants more people to know about the impact which CCC has on Iowa families.
“CCC provides so many programs for all ages and continually strives to provide more: from hospital programs to camps to support initiatives for parents,” Julie said. “This nonprofit truly makes a difference for the kids and families; we to reach every child/family throughout the state (and even those that have moved out of state). CCC has a small staff of 10, and yet they make a huge difference!”
Julie and her husband Jon (also a doctor) live in Winterset. Her twin sons attend Iowa State University, although she’s still a Hawkeye at heart. She enjoys baking, cooking, and spending time with family and her two dogs.
